Volumes & Ethics

Color paper on board. 12x12 inches (30.5x30.5 cm). It's been a while since I wanted to make a piece using the 15th monohedral tiling convex pentagon, discovered in 2015. It's definitely an intriguing shape.

This challenging piece plays with several optical illusions. Some are visible on the photos, but only seeing it for real is when it shows all it's beauty.

While in the series Persicans all my works have an ethnic or cultural ingredient, the series Volumes and Ethics is about exploring the possibilities of pure geometrics and how our brains interpret them. I'm very happy about how this one came out; I was able to play with optical illusions and the wild idea of unfolding new dimensions.

A different approach to curved shapes.
Many, many hours and a lot of work on this colorful piece. More than 300 different elements, each one made of 3 or 4 colors, but the result definitely pays off.

The Penrose tiling is aperiodic; meaning it extends to the infinite without creating a pattern to replicate itself. It's named after Roger Penrose, who investigated it in the 70's. It's geometry helped to understand quasicrystals. This variation has only two types of shapes, darts and kites, with only seven assembly possibilities. The proportion between the two shapes is the golden ratio.

Paper on foam board.

Here I wanted to try a subtle use of color, that's why all the color pieces are hidden to the eye. We only see their reflection over the white paper.

On each piece I try something new. In this one I enjoyed playing with the soft watercolor tones, and it's also my first attempt with curved shapes and creases. Very tricky!
